Amoxil (amoxicillin) is an antibiotic in the penicillin class. This group is characterized by a similar mode of action. Antibiotics of the penicillin group do not kill bacteria, but they prevent bacteria from forming the cell walls. Amoxil is effective against aerobic gram-positive bacteria and penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae strains. Sometimes this antibiotic is applied in dental surgery to prevent any infection. Antibiotics are never indicated for common cold, flu, or any viral infections.

Amoxil is indicated in treatment of bacterial infections including ear infections, bronchitis, bladder infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, salmonella infection, and infection of respiratory tract.

Amoxil is supplied in the different forms, such as powder for oral suspension and a 500mg capsule with royal blue cap and pink opaque, imprinted with Amoxil and 500. Pediatric drops for oral suspension contain Amoxicillin trihydrate and bubble-gum-flavored pink suspensions.

Amoxicillin is recommended to be taken every 8 hours irrespective of food.

In most cases Amoxil dosage indicated for adult patients is 250mg every 8 hours or 500mg every 12 hours, depending on the infection type.

For children under 40 kg, Amoxil dosage is 25 mg/kg/day in equal doses every 12 hours or 40 mg/kg/day in equal doses every 8 hours depending on the infection type.

Amoxil like other antibiotics may cause serious adverse reactions. Read carefully all contra-indications and possible symptoms of unexpected side effects. In case if you experience unusual conditions, seek urgently the medical attention. Amoxicillin side effects include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dark urine, stomach pain, heartburn, skin itching, bleeding, headache, dizziness, black-out, and agitation.
